Determine the location of the rack to be installed.

Measure 16 inches through the wall, and use the stud detector, tape measure and pencil to find the next stud according to the same steps. Continue to measure another 16 inches through the wall and mark the stud. You have now marked three studs, with a total distance of 32 inches.
Keep the first standard at the mark in the middle of the mark stud above the wall. Position the standard at the height you want to support the shelf, and mark the position where the first hole in the standard contacts the wall.
Drill a 1/8 inch diameter hole, about 3 inches deep, through the wall and into the stud.
Drive a 2-inch long flat head screw with a diameter of 1/8 inch through the top hole and stud in the shelf standard.
Place the spirit level and standard of a 4-foot carpenter. Make sure that the standard is vertical, and drill another guide hole into the wall through the bottom hole in the standard.
